Public consultation on Consumer Rights Bill begins
May 21, 2021
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment has announced a public consultation on the General Scheme of the Consumer Rights Bill 2021 is now open.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is responsible for the enforcement of consumer protection law and the provision of information to consumers about their rights. We welcome the opportunity to contribute to the consultation and encourage consumers, traders and stakeholders to submit their views on the Bill and influence the future of consumer protection in Ireland.
Consumer protection law is currently set out in a broad range of Irish and European laws, including the Consumer Protection Act 2007, the Consumer Rights Directive, the Sale of Goods Act 1893 and the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980.
The Consumer Rights Bill 2021 will consolidate some of the current pieces of legislation and give effect to a number of EU Directives covering sale contracts, contracts for the supply of digital content, contracts for the supply of a service and strengthening the transparency requirements for terms and conditions in consumer contracts.
Information on the Consumer Rights Bill and how stakeholders and interested parties can submit their views to the consultation is available on the Department’s website here.
The consultation, which opened on Thursday 20 May, will close on Wednesday 30 June.
