Isolde Goggin retires as Chairperson of the CCPC
October 13, 2021
Isolde Goggin has retired from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) having completed two terms as Chairperson.
Isolde was appointed as a Member of the Competition Authority in July 2010 and was responsible for the Advocacy Division before moving to the role of Chairperson in October 2011. She took up her most recent appointment on 31 October 2014 when the CCPC was established, following the amalgamation of the Competition Authority with the National Consumer Agency.
Before joining the CCPC, Isolde was Chairperson of Ireland’s Commission for Communications Regulation, and prior to this she was Commissioner there from 2002 to 2004. She started out her career as an engineer, later moving into business management and then regulation, including working with Eircom, DG Information Society of the European Commission and Ericsson.
During her time as Chair, Isolde oversaw the growth of the CCPC in both size and remit with new responsibilities in the areas of product safety and digital regulation. She advocated for important changes including in legal reform, and for the introduction of stronger penalties for white collar crime. Her retirement comes as the Competition (Amendment) Bill 2021 is in the process of being drafted, and which will substantially reform Irish competition law enforcement.
Isolde’s extensive knowledge and expertise is widely recognised by the international community. Alongside developing and leading the CCPC, Isolde was extremely active in Europe, representing the CCPC and Ireland on multiple forums and committees.
Isolde’s legacy is the establishment of the CCPC from the amalgamation of two organisations into the united team that it is now with a focus on consumer welfare. As a result of her leadership the CCPC is now a stronger force to the benefit of consumers and the wider economy and is in a position to take on significant additional responsibilities to continue its mission of making markets better for everyone.
