CCPC funding now available for collaborative financial literacy initiatives

December 27, 2024

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is to contribute €250,000 towards adult financial literacy projects in 2025.  The projects will support adults with the skills needed to build financial literacy and access financial services.

The CCPC funding is included in a £1 million Collaboration and Innovation Fund, announced today by Minister Patrick O’Donovan from the Department for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. The Fund is designed to support adults with unmet literacy, numeracy, digital and financial literacy needs.

CCPC research on Financial Literacy in Ireland found that one in three adults were just getting by financially while one in eight could only cover their costs for a month or less in the event of an income shock. The latest figures from the Programme for International Assessment for Adult Competencies (PIAAC), published by the OECD, showed that one in four adults in Ireland struggle with everyday maths.

Kevin O’Brien, member of the CCPC said:

“We’re delighted that the CCPC is partnering with SOLAS to fund financial literacy projects though the Collaboration and Innovation Fund. We want more adults across Ireland to have access to practical tools and education to manage their finances effectively. By partnering with SOLAS we hope to reach those communities that need it most.”

The funding announcement by the CCPC follows the publication in April 2024 by the Department of Finance of a mapping report into the development of a Financial Literacy Strategy.

Kevin O’Brien continued:

“This funding will support the resourcing of community adult financial literacy projects in 2025 that will be integral to delivering on the ambition of the new Financial Literacy Strategy.”
