CCPC welcomes new competition cooperation agreement between EU and UK
October 30, 2024
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) welcomes the successful conclusion of technical negotiations between the EU and the UK on a new competition cooperation agreement. This landmark agreement represents a significant step towards more effective enforcement of competition law, enabling direct cooperation between the EU Commission, the national competition authorities of EU Member States, and the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
The cooperation agreement is designed to streamline cooperation between the UK and EU Competition Authorities, ensuring that significant competition issues are addressed collaboratively and efficiently. This will benefit both businesses and consumers across Europe and the UK. It not only strengthens the existing framework under the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) but also marks the first time that EU competition authorities can collaborate directly with a non-EU Member State.
Welcoming the announcement, Brian McHugh, Chairperson of the CCPC, said:
Return to News“The CCPC is committed to promoting open and fair competition and welcomes this significant advancement in EU-UK relations. This agreement represents the potential for enhanced collaboration to enforce competition law and ultimately foster competitive and dynamic markets.
It is a great example of how cooperation can lead to better outcomes for everyone. By working together, we can ensure competition is fair, benefit consumers and support growth for Irish and EU businesses.”
