CCPC looks back at a decade supporting consumers
October 31, 2024
When you’re ten, birthdays are more about looking forward than looking back. What ten-year-old doesn’t secretly dream about being eleven?
For us at the CCPC, our tenth birthday is a chance to pause briefly to reflect on the past, but it’s mainly about planning for the future. Of course, we’ve grown a lot over the past decade, and we now have over 200 dedicated employees working to protect and inform consumers. But we still have the same enthusiasm and excitement for the work we do on your behalf.
A lot has changed in those ten years. There was no Brexit. No TikTok. Dublin hadn’t even started its six in a row. That feels like forever ago. But then you realise that Taylor Swift released 1989 in October 2014, and it all seems like only yesterday.
When we look back, we can stand proudly over our successes. The thousands of unsafe products we’ve removed from shelves. The fake car traders we’ve exposed. The unfair mergers we’ve blocked. The enhanced protections we’ve enforced.
Consumers are better protected now. The Consumer Rights Act, which we championed, makes the marketplace work better for everyone. Our website, newsletter, helpline and social media channels keep consumers informed. And it’s not just consumers. Businesses know to turn to the CCPC for information on how to comply with their legal obligations.
And there is more to come. We will continue to push for greater powers for the CCPC to prosecute businesses that flout consumer law. We do this on behalf of you, the consumer. To make the difference we want to make, we need powers to fine businesses. And when we take prosecutions, we need laws in place that allow the courts to issue financial penalties that will really deter businesses from offending again.
At our tenth birthday celebrations last week, we spoke about our achievements, but we mainly focused on the next ten years. So much can happen, but you can rely on one fact: the CCPC will be there to fight for consumers every step of the way.
