Wild Roots Festival organisers ordered by CCPC to refund ticket holders
August 6, 2024
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has ordered the organisers of Wild Roots to repay customers who bought tickets for the festival which was cancelled in May.
The festival, trading under the name NOC Shop, has until 16 August 2024 to issue refunds or company bosses could face fines of €4,000 or a possible jail sentence of 6 months.
The festival was due to take place in Hazelwood, County Sligo from Friday 31 May until Monday 3 June. Consumers were informed on Monday 13 May 2024 that Wild Roots had been cancelled.
Consumer law states that where a trader fails to supply a service, the consumer has the right to a full refund. Once the consumer contacts the trader seeking their refund, the trader must reimburse the consumer within 14 days.
The CCPC issued a statement when the festival was cancelled, advising consumers of their rights. Since then, the CCPC has been contacted by 39 consumers who have not been refunded.
If consumers are not refunded, the CCPC can prosecute NOC Shop. If convicted, NOC Shop may be liable to a fine of up to €4,000 and a prison sentence of up to 6 months.
The CCPC has also advised consumers to check if they may be able to recover the cost of their ticket from their debit or credit card company through a chargeback process. Further details on chargeback are available on disputed card transactions (chargeback).
The CCPC is the statutory body responsible for enforcing and promoting compliance with competition, consumer protection and product safety law, with new and expanding roles in digital and data regulation. For consumer queries and complaints, contact the CCPC helpline on 01 402 5555 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm) or via our contact us form or email ask@ccpc.ie. For more information visit www.ccpc.ie
